Driver of the Month – August 2020

I have the pleasure this month of introducing our next driver of the month – Thomas Schmitz.

Thomas has been driving with BWY Transport just over a year now but has already made a big impact on our team.    When he is on the phone with dispatch or operations, it’s not uncommon to hear that person end up laughing or carrying on a great conversation with him.  He is a very relational and caring kind of guy.  But that isn’t the only reason he was nominated for driver of the month.

“He runs hard and services the freight well. He jumps in and helps unload when he sees a need even though he’s not required to do that”  – dispatcher April Mulligan

“Thomas always keeps his head down and works hard.  He always comes through with what he says he’s going to do and faces obstacles with a good attitude.  We are lucky to have him on our team!” – director of Operations, Adam Howard.

Tom really hasn’t been driving a big rig all that long.  He had driven a truck a short time when he was 18 but then obtained his engineering degree in San Diego, CA.  He worked as an engineer for 35 years in the plastic engineering industry before deciding to retire.

A motorcycle ride  on the “Dragon” and “Rattler”  led him to fall in love with the beautiful scenery of the North Carolina mountains.  He made a deal on some land where he built two cabins to enjoy his retirement with family.  But as they say, “life happened” and he ran out of retirement money helping family.    So, remembering back to his late teens when he drove a truck for a short time and liking the fact that it wasn’t a very physical job, he knew it would be a good option for him to make money. So in 2017 he went back to work as a Truck driver and eventually BWY Transport was lucky enough to snag him.

Family is important to Tom.  He is married and has a daughter, two sons, a daughter in law, granddaughter and great grandchild on the way!  He enjoys his time with family at his cabin on Tranquility ridge and riding his 1900 Roadliner motorcycle,  but says after a few days home, the road starts calling his name and he is ready to go.  “Me and My gal get along better when we aren’t on each other’s backs all the time” as Tom puts it.

What he enjoys about driving…  “Going down roads I haven’t been down before”.  He tries to eat healthy out on the road and will usually stop at Wal-Mart to get a few groceries and prepare his own food.  As for road listening music – he is a fan of rock and roll and old country – like  Meryl Haggard and George Jones.

When asked about future plans and how long he would drive a truck, Tom stated “until I can’t drive anymore!”
